...and her words thunder across the land

Last night Patsy, Dr. M. and I attended a belly dancing extravaganza. Our teacher, Lise, has had her school for ten years now, and this was a big anniversary bash. The show was choreographed as a visit to Egypt, the first thing to happen when the lights went down was a broadcast by our captain informing us of speed and elevation, temperature, time change, etc. A stewardess came out and told us to fasten our seat belts (she demonstrated with a belly dancing scarf), pointed out the exits, and bade us enjoy our flight.

The curtain opened on the three pyramids at Giza with several dancers posed in a typical Egyptian hieroglyphic fashion on the front of the stage, and several more in gorgeous red harem costumes behind who danced a couple of numbers after the statues walked off stage. There were several changes of scene, lots more dancing in beautiful costumes, with a film about Egypt and a propoganda film about Lise and her school. This was all en franais of course, and I didnt get everything, but I did all right. Lise herself danced two solos in the first half as the goddess Isis. She was breathtaking.

The second half began as a Cairo open market scene, and many of the dancers performed in solos and small groups, including an ensemble of really little girls who looked very cute in their harem outfits and rather ridiculous shimmying and wiggling their non-existent fannies. They got the most applause, however. Then a woman who had taught one of our classes in Lises absence danced a solo with two veils which was absolutely incredible. We came out of the theatre to a downpour, but luckily I had my Merde, il pleut umbrella with me and arrived more or less unsodden at my car.

Today Buddy Boy and I went to the mall to buy him running shoes. I love going out with my son. Hes such good company. We also hit Costco, where we sampled all-natural, fat- and dairy-free sorbets, and bought mango, chocolate and pear (three for $13.00) which is probably not a bargain, but they were so delicious we couldnt resist.

Then I watched Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy before it had to be returned to the video store and loved it. I read those books years ago and loved them then. This was really fine. The Vogons with their bureaucracy were hilarious and Arthur Dent was so endearing in his clueless way.
