Elgan speaks
...and her words thunder across the land

Port of Spain, Trinidad

Yes, I really am here, after that hellish two weeks of score and parts preparation, in the land of the hummingbird and the calabash. We spent an idyllic four days on the island of Tobago, a tropical paradise if there ever was one, enjoying the heat, the extremely leisurely way of life, the crystal-clear water on the fine, sandy beach, and the hospitality of everyone we met. The people were fantastic. We also had more of a honeymoon, if you know what I mean, than we have in years. Woo hoo!

j-leem met us at the airport and took the plane with us from Port of Spain to Crown Point, Tobago, spending the day and leaving in the evening to get back to her son and her job. She has been wonderful. I count myself so lucky to have made such a great friend. At her instigation, we checked out of the grotty hotel we first checked into here and got us settled in a second one that is absolutely charming. The first one wasnt really all that bad, just that the conference centre aspect of it was played up a lot more than the tourist accommodation part. The wallpaper was peeling, the air conditioner noisy, the elevator was broken, and there was a disco on the property that boomed and banged until late into the night. If it hadnt been for the noisy air conditioner, I dont think I would have slept at all.

We also met her mum and her boyfriend, both wonderful people, who took us out last night, along with the boyfriends brother (who is visiting because their father just had major heart surgery--hes 81 and doing really well) to a place called Jennys, where we had super Chinese food, and afterwards to a bistro called Arthurs. We got to meet Arthur, even, although we never did meet Jenny. It was late though, and I was pooping out, so we called it an early night.

I could go on for pages and pages, but I shant. Hubby is in the hotel room, working on the piano reduction for his viola concerto (we were able to fax 12 pages from a travel agency in Tobago to the violist in Montreal) as he is hoping to fax the rest tomorrow morning from j-leems office. I am waiting for my new friend to pick us up for a day at Maracas Beach, and then to a show tonight, a comedy, which we will attend with a couple of her friends. If they are anything like the masseuse who gave me a full-body massage at the hotel on Thursday afternoon, they must also be great people.

Okay, I must finish this off, or I will go on for pages and pages. Just one quick addendum though. Remember how worried I was about my kids and their homeward trek from Florida? Well, they were supposed to arrive late Thursday night, and we called twice on Friday, leaving a message the first time but otherwise getting no answer. Finally I called Grandma and Grandpa in Florida, who told me that they had put the kids on their plane on time and had made them promise to phone when they got home. Of course they hadnt.

Fortunately, Hubby had the telephone number for one of Little Princess friends sister, the one with the recording studio in Montreal where they were going to be putting together a demo with their band this weekend. He called her and was informed that our daughter had in fact just been speaking to her brother. He called the brother who said that she was on her way to meet him so they could drive to his sisters in Montreal. So I emailed both her and Buddy Boy (MSN doesnt work on this computer) to let them know we had changed hotels.

Before we left for the restaurant with j-leems mom, the phone rang and it was Buddy Boy. He had already called his grandparents before dialing us, and had been at a friends house that day, hence the telephone silence. He promised hed shovel the driveway before we got home. Little Princess called the hotel and left a message that she was at her friends sisters place. So all is right with the world and I can stop worrying. Im such a mom!
